A 50,000 SF new modern interpretation of 2,000-year-old Korean Buddhist tradition, this temple is located in the heart of Seoul and is comprised of three shrine halls, longterm stay hotel facilities for travelling monks & scholars, a penthouse residence of the head Buddhist priest and two-level restaurants & gathering places for the followers. The initial design scheme calls for mimicking Buphwajungsa’s main symbol, white lotus; exterior stone veins & mullions resembles ‘veins’ of the lotus flower. Due to its construction cost budget overrun, we have modified the design to house the 70,000 letters of the ‘actual’ Buddhist ‘lotus’ script in Chinese inscribed on a 50cm x 125cm granite, 50mm thick panel (total 1800 in number). We have also install an indirect LED lighting to make the building glow at night. The main interior design idea is to represent the ‘lotus’ script via covering the entire walls of the shrine with a wooden pocket that houses a 20cm high Buddha statues (over 10,000 in number). All of the building material used in this design is ‘natural’; wood & stone predominantly.
